Leonardo da Vinci
Italy was going through the Renaissance during the time of Leonardo
da Vinci. There were many advances in science and art, both of which
Leonardo was an expert in.
His father was a respected lawyer, while his mother was a common
women. As a young lad, he learned a variety of skills including:
metalworking, leather arts, carpentry, and sculpting. When he was
twenty years old, he was a master painter of the Guild of Saint Luke.
From 1482 to 1499, Leonardo worked for a man called Lorenzo de'
Medici. It was during this time that he painted one of his best
pieces, The Last Supper.
Leonardo painted at least 23 works of art, but his most famous, and
arguably the most famous painting in the world, is the Mona Lisa.
Although it was completed between 1505 and 1507, it was never
delivered to the commissioner. da Vinci kept it with him for his
entire life. It was his attempt at perfection.
Although Leonardo da Vinci died on May 2, 1519, he left a huge legacy
behind him that still exists today. He was one of history's best
artists and an amazing inventor, and will never be forgotten.
In the early Renaissance, if you wanted something to be spiritual,
you had to sacrifice its reality. In the High Renaissance, you could
make something look spiritual while still having its reality.
I think that Leonardo's artwork makes everything seem real, even
though he mostly painted from his imagination.
